The Reading Branch of BAGSD was started in 1947. At that time and up to around 1975 it was known as the BAA (The British Alsatian association), because anything that was remotely connected with Germany was taboo following the war. In about 1975 the name changed to the British Association for German Shepherd Dogs and thus remains today.
The branch has had a fair amount of success over the years. Most famously was John Simpson, the chairman of the club won Crufts Obedience Competition in 1977, with a dog called Courage, magnificent achievement.
The Club has also been successful at the Southern Area Interbranch Competition. At one time we won the competition 9 out of 10 years, going on to win the all England Finals on several occasions.
The club has always maintained a high level of instruction which is still maintained today by Brian Allum & Terry Hooper, both are BAGSD qualified instructors Mick Fenning has passed his part one BAGSD instructors Exam. Jointly they have over 80 years experience in dog training.
Some years ago we ran a demonstration team and performed at many local shows, including the Woodley Carnival, the Reading Show, Binfield Flower Show, Wokingham Show, and many school fetes. We incorporated obedience work set to music, followed by an agility race.
The Club is now pleased to offer agility training under the guidance of Terry Hooper a very committed instructor specializing in this activity. Terry has been very instrumental in not only setting up this facility but in also making some excellent equipment for the clubs use. He has also attended instructors courses and is responsible for setting up this Website.
